Interview Sherry Mathewson

Carol McPhee
1) First of all I'd like to know the name of your novel and what inspired you to write it?
“The Barrier Stone” came to me when I came up with the thought of a division between two worlds, one of them evil. A barrier that grew weaker as the years pass and soon would fail. How could the barrier be strengthened? How could the division be closed between the two worlds? And the adventure grew from there.
2)How long have you been writing?
I have been writing for as long as I can remember. I have actively pursued publication the last 5 years.
3) Do you have other novels published, if so what and by who?
No, “The Barrier Stone” is my first published novel.
4) Has anyone ever tried to discourage you from writing, especially before getting word you would be published with Wings ePress?
Quite the opposite, I have had encouragement from friends and family. They all say I “tell” a good story.
5) Is there a particular person you use as a model for each main character?
No one in particular. I like a strong heroine as well as an equally strong hero.
6) When do you sit down to write?
Usually late at night, after ten. I’m a bit of a night owl. My mind wanders and the stories take over in the quiet of my office.
7) Do you enjoy research and what are your best sources?
I love research and learning the why and where for of things. I collect books on a variety of subjects. I use Google and the internet to find information, as well as the various libraries in our area.
8) What types of stories do you like to read?
I read across all genre and non-fiction as well. Depending on how I’m feeling at the moment, I could be reading Harry Potter or the latest murder mystery or an anthropology book. Or all three at the same time.
9) Do you brainstorm ideas with other people?
Sometimes when I’m having problems with my story.
10) What do you like to do that you consider romantic?
As to what I feel is romantic, well for me, I like a quiet evening with my husband, a wonderful dinner we both create, and watching an old movie like "Casablanca"
11) Who, other than friends and family members have been strong influences in your writing career?
Other authors who share their knowledge and experiences. And their books, I read extensively and marvel at other author’s imaginations.
12) Are you presently working on another novel, if so what is it about?
I am working on a sequel to “The Barrier Stone” called “Tesrant’s Request.” The Kingdom of Tesrant makes a request of the Queen of Monkurre that is a bit unusual.
