Interview Saje Williams

1) I like your title. It suggests Sci Fi to me. What is is really about?
Freak City is (slightly) futuristic urban fantasy. It's about a werewolf (the first werewolf, as a matter of fact) who travels to Tacoma, the center of the "freak" revolution, in search of his best friend. After the immortal, Loki, released a series of metaviruses into the population, humanity has undergone vast changes. The city of Tacoma has been unofficially renamed "Freak City," because it's become something of a Mecca for these altered humans.
2) Have you been writing long?
I've been writing since I was about 9 or 10. I read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings when I was in 3rd grade. This started an addiction to reading that got me into a little trouble by the time I was in 4th grade. As a punishment for not doing assigned work in school, they took my books away. My response? I grabbed a notebook and started creating my own stories.
3) Would you tell me a little about yourself: Where you were born, went to school... married... children??? Whatever... to help your readers know you a little.
I was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Then, when I was still an infant, my dad brought me back to the west coast. From there we moved around a lot... Hawaii, San Jose, Central Oregon (hence the setting of my 2nd novel, Of Man And Monster), Boise, the Puget Sound, then Sacramento, CA before returning permanently (except for the occasional road trip) to the Puget Sound. I went to several grade schools, nine different Jr. Highs, and seven different high schools. And two community colleges. I'm married, with a house-full of animals, and I have two children from a previous relationship that live some four hundred miles away.
4) When do you find time to do writing? Do you work regular job, too?
I did until I was recently laid off. Currently I'm taking advantage of the opportunity to work on a couple of writing projects and getting others ready for publication.
5) Have you written other novels? Do you write other genres? Poetry?
I've got two books out through Wings (this will be my third) and I have two books coming out from Samhain Publishing next year. I'm also becoming known for my political essays. I used to write poetry when I was younger, but not anymore. Fantasy seems to be my best genre. I love suspense, but I can't write it.
6) Do you like to read in the genre you have written?
I've been a fan of science fiction and fantasy since I was a kid.
7) Do you outline before you start writing a novel? Or do you just let it rip... and then edit?
I don't outline. Outlining, for me, sucks the life out of an idea.
8) Do you have plans for any future books you'd like to mention?
I've got a billion plans in the works. No telling what will or will not come to fruition.
