Interview Lori Derby Bingley

Carol McPhee
1. We’ll start off with easy ones like how long have you been writing?
I feel as though there’s never been a time that I haven’t been writing. I still have works dating back as far as the first grade, when I could barely write the alphabet, yet was penning poems and short stories. My ‘professional’ career in writing began five years ago with the completion of my first novel, “The Night She Came Home”.
2. What is the best time of day for you to get in touch with your muse?
I am a stay at home mother with five children, so the ONLY time of day I get to do any work is once they’re in bed. It’s the best time for me because there are no distractions, even though it means a lot of late nights and large bags under my eyes!
3. Do you write everyday?
I try to write a little every day, because I’m always in the midst of one project or another. Even if I jot down some ideas for either the story I’m working on, or the next WIP, I can usually be found in front of my laptop every night.
4. What would you tell a new writer is the one most important thing needed to get published?
The one most important thing? A love for what you’re doing. Don’t go into this career thinking you’re going to be an instant millionaire, or that everyone is going to love your work. Expect rejection, but don’t let it deter you or keep you from submitting elsewhere. If it’s meant to beyou’ll find the right home for your work.
5. If you were marooned on a desert island with a handsome male, what would be the three traits you would want him to possess?
hmmm… have to think about this one. Will my husband read this, I wonder?? lol. I would say a strong back (for building my home), a talent for cooking, and a great swimmer in case we spot a ship close to shore.
6. What would you consider a romantic outing?
One that doesn’t involve the kids! lol. A romantic outing for me is just being with the man I love, walking and talking together. I don’t need roses or candlelight to be ‘romanced’, I just love spending time together one on one.
7. Where do you hope to see yourself in five years as far as writing goes?
I would love to see my books on the shelves here in town, without having to beg the stores to stock them. I want to be comfortable enough with a company to stick with them and have a couple of releases come out each year. Oh, and to be filthy rich of course. lol.
8. Is there a story that you are dying to write, but haven’t had time to get to yet?
There are SO many stories I’m dying to write. But “Lorelei” is the one I wanted to write for so long and finally completed it. I’m very proud of it and look forward to seeing people’s reactions to it.
9. Who has had the most influence on your writing career?
I can’t pick one person in particular who has had an influence on my writing. I would simply say that life in general has been my biggest influence. And the support I’ve received from family, friends, teachers, and the local community (especially our local paper, The Guardian). I’m very blessed.
10. What has been the most fun in writing your August releaseplotting, characterization, or research. Why?
I would have to say characterization, because it’s the first book I’ve written that is based on “real” people. I took a great deal of my own memories and experiences and placed them in this bookwith a twist of fiction, of course.
11. What do you do for relaxation after a particularly long session of writing?
Relaxation? I know I’ve heard that word before! lol. I love to watch movies. I’m a sucker for a great romance, or just to sit back and watch some of my favorite shows with my husband (and/or the kids).
12. Do you have other novels in publication? If so, what are they?
Yes, I have three other novels in publication. “The Night She Came Home”; “One Eye In The Darkness”; and “A Sister’s Secret”all romantic suspense. “A Sister’s Secret” is my newest release with Champagne Books, and has been on their best seller list twice, as well as being the Publisher’s Pick in May of this year. I have two more romantic suspense set to be released in 2006: “Fraternity” in February, and “Confession” in October.
