Interview D. C. Miller

by

Nancy Arant Williams

Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Deanne C. Miller. Congratulations on your new book, Hurricane Hunters.

1) Tell us a little about your book, Hurricane Hunters. The title is very intriguing.

I had the characters in mind, and since I live on Florida’s west coast, the title seemed a natural.

2) Could you tell us how long you've been writing?

I’ve been writing twelve years.

3) Who do you think has most influenced your writing? A teacher, a parent? Another author?

Mary Stewart, Tolkien and Maggie Davis, all authors.

4) Do you write full time or have another job or family?

I retired from running Title Insurance companies and began writing. My children are grown. I live with my husband who supports my writing endeavors wholeheartedly.

5) Tell us a little about yourself so we can get to know you better. Do you have hobbies?

Too many hobbies to name them all. Three or four that might be of interest. I’m an artist, (paintings,), an avid reader and have taken up wheel-thrown pottery. Oh, also wild about sports.

6) What's your writing environment like? Do you have an office all to yourself, or do you write in the dining room amidst lots of banter and noise?

The far end of my long, narrow living room serves as my office, complete with all the office furniture, printer, scanner, etc. It’s relatively quiet. I only share it with our two great danes during the day.

7) Do you outline your work before you write, or write by the seat of the pants?

I outline, but not extensively.

8) Is this your first published written work?

This is my fourth published work. I published another YA with Simon and Schuster, a non-fiction history of the Miami Dolphins with Ravenwood Press, and a romantic mystery, Shadow of the Banyans with Wings-ePress.

9) Do you have plans for more books in the near future?

Yes. My problem is there are so many plots going through my mind, it’s not always easy to pick which one to do next.

10. What do you like the best about the writing process?

Getting the characters to step off the page and talk to me.

11) What do you like the least?

That’s easy. Outlining.

12) Who are your favorite authors?

Mary Stewart, Tolkien, Terry Brooks, Steven Donaldson, and on and on and on. I like a good book, historical, fantasy, mystery, suspense. I only steer away from horror and gore.

Thanks, and best wishes for a long and successful writing career.
